Scripture Study
Fall 2007

The Book of Psalms
Time and Place: Tuesdays, October 16 – December 18 at 7:15 p.m.
Parish Center - Neale Room (ground floor)

We will begin again in the fall on Tuesday, October 16.  As always the group will begin with a study of Scripture.  This year we are studying the Book of Psalms.  Our discussion of the Psalms will take us to the week of Thanksgiving [November 20].

Since there are so many translations, we will be using as our common text the Collegeville Bible Commentary by Richard J. Clifford [Vol. 22:  Psalms 1-72 and Vol. 23:  Psalms 73-150].  This commentary, published by Liturgical Press, is handy and convenient, costs about $5.00 per volume and uses the New American Bible translation of the Psalms, the translation used in our liturgies.

The Book of Psalms is truly the prayer book of both Jewish and Christian communities.  The Psalms embrace the joys and frustrations of the faith journey.  We will be especially interested in taking a deeper look at the experience of God which these prayer-poems both presume and prompt.

Though we presume no previous study of the Psalms, you may find it helpful to read the following as summer preparation for our discussions:

  • Thomas Merton, Praying the Psalms [Liturgical Press, 45pp., $3.95]
  • Walter Brueggemann, Spirituality of the Psalms [Fortress Press, 76pp., $6.00]
  • Daniel F. Polish, Bringing the Psalms to Life [Jewish Lights Publishing, 162pp, $16.95]
The Collegeville Bible Commentary by Richard J. Clifford is available through the Newman Bookstore [202-526-1036] as well as through Amazon and other bookstores.

All are welcome.  There is no need to register.
