Retreats
Jesuit Center for Spirituality Parish Social Justice Young Adult Community

Jesuit Center for Spirituality
Directed by Ellen Crowley, the Jesuit Center for Spirituality is a joint effort of the Maryland Province of Jesuits and Holy Trinity Parish.  The three Jesuit and six lay women directors are all trained in the Ignatian tradition of spirituality and host a number of week or weeks-long retreats, including the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius.  Contact the Center at 202-337-2840, Ext. 107 for additional information or attend the Information Night on September 25, 2006 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. in McKenna Hall.

Retreats in Daily Life

Hundreds of people at Holy Trinity Parish have done the weeklong retreats in daily life that the Center for Jesuit Spirituality Offers.  Here’s how the retreats work.  Announcement of an upcoming retreat will appear in the Sunday bulletin for several weeks prior to the retreat.  After registering for the retreat, a person agrees
  • To pray using Scripture for one half hour a day;
  • To do brief journal writing about their experience of prayer;
  • To meet privately for a half-hour each day with an assigned, trained spiritual director; and
  • To attend the opening and closing session of the retreat at the parish center.
Phase I Retreat
Twice each year, in October and March, an introductory week of directed prayer is offered.  The retreat begins on a Sunday afternoon with a two-hour gathering.  This evening includes introductions, an explanation of the structure and history of the retreat, pointers and handouts on prayer, an experience of guided prayer, plus an opportunity to share the fruits of that guided prayer with each other.  Retreatants then meet briefly with their assigned spiritual director.  There they finalize individual meeting times and receive Scripture readings for Monday’s Prayer.  The retreat closes with another gathering on the following Saturday morning.
Phase II Retreat
Once a year, in December, a follow-up for people who have done the first retreat is offered.  Like the Phase I retreat, this retreat begins on a Sunday afternoon and concludes on a Saturday morning.
Phase III Retreat
A six-week retreat during January and February for those who want a more extended introduction to the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius is offered.  Phase III retreats begin on Saturday morning with a two-hour gathering similar in format to Phases I and II.  During this Phase III retreat, the retreat and spiritual director meet once a week for an hour.  Throughout the six weeks, retreatants pray with assigned Scripture passages for an hour each day and reflect on their prayer by writing in a journal.
Spiritual Exercises
For those who are ready for it and can make the time commitment, the complete Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius are offered.  This retreat is also individually directed.  It usually covers a period of seven or eight months, and as with all our retreats in daily life, the retreatants continue to go about their regular activities or work, family, etc. while they are engaged in this program of prayer.

Young Adult Community (YAC) Retreats
These annual weekend retreats are held in the fall and spring at the Bellarmine Retreat Center in Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania.  Generally, the groups explore their faith lives in action with respect to God.  They are weekends of reflection and renewal--and are a great way to become involved in the Young Adult Community (YAC).
Annual Fall Retreat:  Ocotberl 19 – 21, 2007
The Young Adult Community invites young people to gather for this weekend away from the distractions of a busy life in a busy city.

The retreat team has begun planning but your time and talents are needed.  Do you play a musical instrument?  Are you a wiz in the kitchen?  Do you feel called to share your experiences and give a talk?  Are you interested in leading a small group?  You need not have attended or worked at a previous retreat to help out.  For more information or to express interest please contact us at retreat@holytrinityyacs.org.

View photos from the most recent retreat held in April, 2007 on the YAC web site.
