It sounds a bit strange to speak of the print version of a book--how else do books, even books-on-tape, first appear if not in print? The Adams Media Corporation, of Holbrook, Massachusetts, published the print version of this book in 1995. Four years later, when the publisher decided neither to extend the run in hard cover nor to produce a paperback edition, all publishing rights reverted to me, the author. So, I decided to put the book up on this web page for anyone to have free of charge.
Other print publishers took a pass when asked about the possibilities of a paperback edition. No market for a book like this, they said, in a four-percent unemployment economy. They appeared not to notice that Coca Cola laid off 6000 people early in the year 2000 and other employers were also trimming their workforce sails in order to navigate their way through the uncharted waters of the New Economy. Moreover, I was still getting requests for the now-out-of-print book as well as invitations to talk to displaced white-collar workers at "40 Plus" and similar support groups around the country.
I know there are many job seekers out there who need this book. So here it is--free!
In the spirit of the nobody-over-nine-years-old-knows-how-to-set-a-VCR world in which we elders live, I turned for help to a talented and generous Georgetown University student Sara Kim (McDonough School of Business, '00). Sara did quite well in my Georgetown class, "Social Responsibilities of Business," in the fall, 1999 semester; she knows all the twists and turns on the Information Highway. Her skills propelled this book into Cyberspace.
For Sara
Kim's cheerful and competent cooperation in this venture, I am grateful and
you, the reader, are in her debt.
